Driveways, walkways and patios

Concrete Driveway and Patio Contractor in Phoenix, AZ

Thirty to fifty years of Phoenix concrete, replaced one slab at a time.

Maricopa County · Caliche desert floor

Phoenix is a big city with a lot of different ground under it. Lots near the Salt River sit on river soil, homes against the Phoenix Mountains and South Mountain sit on rock, and a wide middle band sits on caliche. Half the houses here went up between the early 1970s and the mid-1990s, so many original driveways, walks and patios are now 30 to 50 years old and showing it.

About Phoenix

Working in Phoenix

Phoenix holds every kind of ground in the Valley, from river soil near the Salt River to rocky lots against the Phoenix Mountains and South Mountain. Half its homes were built between the early 1970s and the mid-1990s, so a lot of original driveways, walks and patios are now 30 to 50 years old.

Sam The Concrete Man North Phoenix works out of an office on West Myrtle Avenue and pours driveways and patios across the city. Every job starts with a free visit to look at the slab you have, the soil under it and where your water goes. The section of a driveway in the street right-of-way is built to City of Phoenix standards, 6 inches thick, usually under a city permit, and we handle that paperwork with you.

The ground under Phoenix

Caliche desert floor

Gravelly desert soil on the fans and terraces of the Valley floor, often with a layer of caliche, soil cemented hard by calcium carbonate or silica, anywhere from a few inches to a few feet down.

Caliche does not dig like dirt, and it does not drain like it either. A tight layer will not let rain or sprinkler water soak through, so the water sits on top of it and softens the soil above. Where caliche is broken out and thrown back in loose, or a slab goes over a soft, wet pocket, the base settles unevenly and the slab cracks over it. Breaking it out takes a breaker or a jackhammer, which is why it often shows up as its own line on a Phoenix quote.

How we build in Phoenix

Dig to firm ground, break out caliche that sits high in the base and haul it off the site, bring in aggregate base compacted in lifts, and slope the slab and the grade so roof and sprinkler water run away from it and off the hardpan.

What fails here first

  • Slabs sunk or cracked beside sprinkler beds and downspouts
  • Water standing along an edge for days after a storm
  • Corners and edges dropped below the next panel
  • Cracks that keep opening over the same low spot
