Concrete Driveway and Patio Contractor in Alhambra, Phoenix, AZ

Mid-century Alhambra homes, fresh concrete from the curb to the yard.

Phoenix · River and wash alluvium

Alhambra is one of the City of Phoenix's urban villages, on the west side of central Phoenix along I-17. A lot of its homes date from the 1950s through the 1970s, so original driveways and patios are wearing out across whole blocks. Typical jobs here are a full driveway replacement, an extra parking pad beside the existing drive, and a back patio big enough for a table and some shade.

Working in Alhambra

Alhambra is one of the City of Phoenix's urban villages, on the west side of central Phoenix along I-17, with a lot of homes from the 1950s through the 1970s.

Ground in Alhambra is mostly river and wash alluvium, silt and sand that drains easily and settles when it's wet or loaded without compaction. Cars parked on the same spot for decades leave their mark. We dig out soft material, compact the new base in lifts and make the section thicker where vehicles sit. The apron at the street is poured to City of Phoenix standards. Call (602) 773-1313 for a free estimate and a printed quote.

The ground under Alhambra

River and wash alluvium

Layered silt, sand and gravel laid down by the Salt River and the desert washes, across the flood plains and alluvial fans of the central and west Valley.

Most river and wash soil drains well and swells very little. Its problem is settlement: loose, dry silt and sand that was never compacted packs down when it gets wet or carries a load, so slabs sink at corners and along tire lines. Close to a wash, monsoon runoff can also cut away the soil at the edge of a slab.

How we build in Alhambra

Compaction done in lifts at the right moisture, with loose or soft soil dug out and replaced, a thicker section anywhere a truck, trailer or RV will park, and grading that keeps runoff off the slab and out from under it. Washes and drainage easements stay open.

What fails here first

  • Corners or joints sunk below the next panel
  • Ruts or cracks along the tire lines of a driveway
  • Gaps opening under the edge of a slab
  • Soil washed out along an edge after a monsoon storm

Alhambra questions

Straight answers

Sam The Concrete Man North Phoenix repairs cracked driveways in Alhambra, many of them decades old and poured on silt and sand that has settled since. Older slabs with little base under them tend to crack across the middle or drop at the street end. We seal cracks on a slab that is still sound, level a sunken panel that stayed in one piece, or replace the broken panels on a new base, and your estimate shows which approach fits.
