Concrete Driveway and Patio Contractor in Maryvale, Phoenix, AZ

Fresh driveways for Maryvale's mid-century tract homes.

Phoenix · River and wash alluvium

Maryvale on Phoenix's west side holds some of the city's older tract neighborhoods. In ZIP 85031 the median home dates to 1959, which means plenty of driveways and back slabs here have been carrying cars and summer heat for more than sixty years. Farther west the houses get newer, and the jobs shift toward patios, side pads and room for one more car.

About Maryvale

Working in Maryvale

Maryvale, on Phoenix's west side, has some of the city's older tract neighborhoods (ZIP 85031's median home dates to 1959) alongside newer ones farther west.

On the older lots, we break out the old slab, dig to firm ground and compact the river-laid soil in lifts before the new pour. Where a truck or work van parks, we pour a thicker section. In the City of Phoenix the apron in the street right-of-way is built to city standards, 6 inches thick, usually under a city permit, and we pull it. A free estimate comes with a printed quote.

The ground under Maryvale

River and wash alluvium

Layered silt, sand and gravel laid down by the Salt River and the desert washes, across the flood plains and alluvial fans of the central and west Valley.

Most river and wash soil drains well and swells very little. Its problem is settlement: loose, dry silt and sand that was never compacted packs down when it gets wet or carries a load, so slabs sink at corners and along tire lines. Close to a wash, monsoon runoff can also cut away the soil at the edge of a slab.

How we build in Maryvale

Compaction done in lifts at the right moisture, with loose or soft soil dug out and replaced, a thicker section anywhere a truck, trailer or RV will park, and grading that keeps runoff off the slab and out from under it. Washes and drainage easements stay open.

What fails here first

  • Corners or joints sunk below the next panel
  • Ruts or cracks along the tire lines of a driveway
  • Gaps opening under the edge of a slab
  • Soil washed out along an edge after a monsoon storm

Maryvale questions

Straight answers

Sam The Concrete Man North Phoenix fixes cracked driveways in Maryvale, where some slabs on the older west side streets go back to around 1959. Age, a thin original base and settling in the layered river soil cause most of the cracks we find. On the free estimate we say which repair the slab needs: crack sealing, resurfacing a sound slab, leveling a panel that sank in one piece, or replacing panels to the nearest joints on a new base.
