Concrete Driveway and Patio Contractor in Sunnyslope, Phoenix, AZ

Sloped Sunnyslope lots, rock and all, turned into level ground.

Phoenix · Desert foothills and rock

Sunnyslope sits below North Mountain and the Phoenix Mountains, and most of its homes date from the 1970s and earlier. The closer a lot gets to the mountains, the more likely it is to be rocky and on a slope. That changes how a driveway or patio gets built here. A flat slab on a hillside needs a plan for both the rock and the water.

About Sunnyslope

Working in Sunnyslope

Sunnyslope sits below North Mountain and the Phoenix Mountains, with mostly 1970s and older homes. Lots closer to the mountains can be rocky and sloped.

Rock can sit right under the surface, and support can switch from solid rock to loose fill within a few feet. We excavate into the rock where needed, build up compacted base where it's soft and add drainage above the slab so runoff from uphill goes around it. Where the yard is cut into the slope, a retaining wall holds the ground.

The ground under Sunnyslope

Desert foothills and rock

Sloped lots on and around the Valley’s mountains, where thin, stony soil sits on bedrock or hardpan: granite that weathers to coarse sand in the McDowells, older schist in the Phoenix Mountains, and volcanic rock in parts of the north Valley hills.

On these lots the trouble is grade and water more than the soil itself. Rock and hardpan sit close to the surface, so excavation is slow and the support under a slab can change from rock to fill within a few feet. Monsoon runoff comes down the slope fast and carries loose decomposed granite with it, and any cut into the hill needs a wall built to hold it.

How we build in Sunnyslope

Excavation into the rock or hardpan, a thicker compacted base where the support is uneven, drainage that catches runoff above the slab and carries it around, and engineered retaining walls where the grade is cut. Walls on hillside lots often need a permit, and each city and town has its own rules, so we check yours.

What fails here first

  • Edges undercut or washed out after storms
  • Runoff and gravel washing across the driveway from uphill
  • Cracks where a slab crosses from rock to fill
  • Retaining walls that lean or weep
