Concrete Driveway and Patio Contractor in Moon Valley, Phoenix, AZ

Moon Valley's 1970s concrete, rebuilt over a lime layer.

Phoenix · Caliche desert floor

Moon Valley sits in the valley between Lookout Mountain and Shaw Butte, and most of its homes were built in the 1970s. Many still have their first driveway, front walk and back patio. Fifty years on, that usually means long cracks, a few panels that tip under your weight and low spots that hold water after a storm. Replacing one panel at a time rarely holds once several have moved.

About Moon Valley

Working in Moon Valley

Moon Valley is an older North Phoenix neighborhood, mostly from the 1970s, in the valley between Lookout Mountain and Shaw Butte. NRCS soil maps show Laveen loam under much of it, a desert soil with a layer of lime built up below the surface.

NRCS soil maps show Laveen loam under much of the neighborhood, a desert soil with a lime layer built up below the surface. That layer holds water, and the soil above it softens. When we rebuild a slab here, we dig to firm ground, break out the lime layer where it's close to the top and set the new concrete on compacted aggregate base with control joints laid out before the pour.

The ground under Moon Valley

Caliche desert floor

Gravelly desert soil on the fans and terraces of the Valley floor, often with a layer of caliche, soil cemented hard by calcium carbonate or silica, anywhere from a few inches to a few feet down.

Caliche does not dig like dirt, and it does not drain like it either. A tight layer will not let rain or sprinkler water soak through, so the water sits on top of it and softens the soil above. Where caliche is broken out and thrown back in loose, or a slab goes over a soft, wet pocket, the base settles unevenly and the slab cracks over it. Breaking it out takes a breaker or a jackhammer, which is why it often shows up as its own line on a Phoenix quote.

How we build in Moon Valley

Dig to firm ground, break out caliche that sits high in the base and haul it off the site, bring in aggregate base compacted in lifts, and slope the slab and the grade so roof and sprinkler water run away from it and off the hardpan.

What fails here first

  • Slabs sunk or cracked beside sprinkler beds and downspouts
  • Water standing along an edge for days after a storm
  • Corners and edges dropped below the next panel
  • Cracks that keep opening over the same low spot
