Concrete Driveway and Patio Contractor in North Central Phoenix, AZ

Big irrigated lots, old shade trees and driveways long overdue.

Phoenix · River and wash alluvium

North Central Phoenix runs along Central Avenue and 7th Street north of Camelback Road, and it's known for ranch homes from the 1940s through the 1960s on large lots. Many of those lots are still flood irrigated and shaded by mature trees. That makes for great backyards and long driveways, and it also means the concrete here lives with a lot of water and a lot of roots.

About North Central Phoenix

Working in North Central Phoenix

North Central Phoenix runs along Central Avenue and 7th Street north of Camelback Road, known for ranch homes from the 1940s to the 1960s on big, flood-irrigated lots with mature trees.

Under the grass is river and wash alluvium, silt and sand that drains well until it gets soaked over and over. When irrigation water runs under a slab, the base can settle and panels drop. We compact the base in lifts, set the slab a little above the flooded part of the yard and add thickened edges that keep irrigation water from washing beneath it. Driveway aprons follow City of Phoenix standards. Call (602) 773-1313 for a free estimate.

The ground under North Central Phoenix

River and wash alluvium

Layered silt, sand and gravel laid down by the Salt River and the desert washes, across the flood plains and alluvial fans of the central and west Valley.

Most river and wash soil drains well and swells very little. Its problem is settlement: loose, dry silt and sand that was never compacted packs down when it gets wet or carries a load, so slabs sink at corners and along tire lines. Close to a wash, monsoon runoff can also cut away the soil at the edge of a slab.

How we build in North Central Phoenix

Compaction done in lifts at the right moisture, with loose or soft soil dug out and replaced, a thicker section anywhere a truck, trailer or RV will park, and grading that keeps runoff off the slab and out from under it. Washes and drainage easements stay open.

What fails here first

  • Corners or joints sunk below the next panel
  • Ruts or cracks along the tire lines of a driveway
  • Gaps opening under the edge of a slab
  • Soil washed out along an edge after a monsoon storm
