Concrete Driveway and Patio Contractor in Paradise Valley Village, Phoenix, AZ

North Phoenix's home turf, three miles from our office.

Phoenix · River and wash alluvium

Paradise Valley Village is the City of Phoenix village north of the Phoenix Mountains Preserve, and it's a separate place from the Town of Paradise Valley to the south. It's the heart of North Phoenix and sits about three miles from our office. Half its homes were built between the late 1970s and the early 1990s, so plenty of driveways and backyard slabs here are on their first replacement.

About Paradise Valley Village

Working in Paradise Valley Village

The City of Phoenix's Paradise Valley Village, a separate place from the Town of Paradise Valley, is the heart of North Phoenix, north of the Phoenix Mountains Preserve. Half its homes were built between the late 1970s and the early 1990s.

Much of the village sits on silt and sand carried down by washes. It drains well, though it settles under a parked truck or after soaking if nobody compacted it. We compact the base in lifts, thicken the slab where vehicles park and keep roof runoff away from the edges. Permits go through the City of Phoenix, and the free estimate comes with a printed quote.

The ground under Paradise Valley Village

River and wash alluvium

Layered silt, sand and gravel laid down by the Salt River and the desert washes, across the flood plains and alluvial fans of the central and west Valley.

Most river and wash soil drains well and swells very little. Its problem is settlement: loose, dry silt and sand that was never compacted packs down when it gets wet or carries a load, so slabs sink at corners and along tire lines. Close to a wash, monsoon runoff can also cut away the soil at the edge of a slab.

How we build in Paradise Valley Village

Compaction done in lifts at the right moisture, with loose or soft soil dug out and replaced, a thicker section anywhere a truck, trailer or RV will park, and grading that keeps runoff off the slab and out from under it. Washes and drainage easements stay open.

What fails here first

  • Corners or joints sunk below the next panel
  • Ruts or cracks along the tire lines of a driveway
  • Gaps opening under the edge of a slab
  • Soil washed out along an edge after a monsoon storm
