Concrete Patio Contractor in Moon Valley, Phoenix, AZ

Fifty-year-old Moon Valley patios, rebuilt for how people use a yard now.

Phoenix · Caliche desert floor

Most Moon Valley houses went up in the 1970s, in the valley between Lookout Mountain and Shaw Butte, and many still have their first patio. Those slabs were sized for a different era: narrow, tucked under the roof, finished smooth and now worn rough. After fifty years we see big cracks, raised edges near old trees, and slabs that slope back toward the family room door. Moon Valley lots tend to be generous, so owners usually want the new patio larger, with a seating area out in the yard and a path to the pool or side gate.

Planning a patio in Moon Valley

NRCS soil maps show Laveen loam under much of Moon Valley, a desert soil with a layer of lime built up below the surface. That lime layer is caliche, and it behaves the same way it does elsewhere in the Valley: water stops at it, the loam above gets soft, and slabs settle. On a Moon Valley patio we take out the soft loam, break up caliche that sits close to the surface, and set compacted aggregate base. Mature trees are common here, so we also check for roots along the slab line.

Moon Valley is inside the City of Phoenix, which handles any permit a patio cover or other structure needs. Older yards here may hide buried irrigation, an old gas line to a grill, or a forgotten slab under the grass, and we look for those at the estimate. Summer pours start in the early morning hours with curing right away, and we plan around monsoon storms. Call (602) 773-1313 for a free estimate and a printed quote before any work starts.

  • Pergola and shade-structure pads, with footers
  • Fire-pit, grill and outdoor-kitchen slabs
  • Step pads and paths to the patio

  • Compacted base for caliche or clay
  • Joint layout that fits the design
  • Color that holds up in the sun
  • A UV-resistant sealer, renewed every few years
The ground under Moon Valley

Caliche desert floor

Gravelly desert soil on the fans and terraces of the Valley floor, often with a layer of caliche, soil cemented hard by calcium carbonate or silica, anywhere from a few inches to a few feet down.

Dig to firm ground, break out caliche that sits high in the base and haul it off the site, bring in aggregate base compacted in lifts, and slope the slab and the grade so roof and sprinkler water run away from it and off the hardpan.

What fails here first

  • Slabs sunk or cracked beside sprinkler beds and downspouts
  • Water standing along an edge for days after a storm
  • Corners and edges dropped below the next panel
  • Cracks that keep opening over the same low spot
