Concrete Patio Contractor in Shadow Mountain, Phoenix, AZ

Shadow Mountain backyards, given a patio built on firm ground.

Phoenix · Caliche desert floor

Shadow Mountain is a mostly 1970s neighborhood wrapped around the small Shadow Mountain preserve, about two miles from our office. Many of its ranch houses have a long back wall and a yard that has gone to gravel or tired grass beyond a short slab under the eave. Owners here tend to ask for a patio that reaches into that space: a seating area with a fire pit, a pad for a shade structure, and step pads out to the side yard. Our crews know the neighborhood, including a 300-square-foot driveway extension we finished in one day and matched to the existing grade.

Planning a patio in Shadow Mountain

Shadow Mountain sits on the caliche desert floor. In 1970s yards it's common to find that the original patio was poured with little or no base, right on native soil, and decades of sprinkler water perched on the caliche layer below have softened it. We remove the old patio, dig to firm ground, break out caliche where it sits high, compact aggregate base and set rebar on chairs. Control joints get marked out before the pour, so any shrinkage crack has a planned place to go.

The City of Phoenix handles permits for Shadow Mountain, and the crew checks whether your shade structure or cover needs one. Being this close to the office makes it easy for us to stop by for the estimate, the layout check and a look after the pour. Summer patios are poured in the cool morning hours with curing started right away, and monsoon dates get moved for storms. Call (602) 773-1313 for a free on-site estimate and a printed quote.

  • Pergola and shade-structure pads, with footers
  • Fire-pit, grill and outdoor-kitchen slabs
  • Step pads and paths to the patio

  • Joint layout that fits the design
  • Color that holds up in the sun
  • A UV-resistant sealer, renewed every few years
The ground under Shadow Mountain

Caliche desert floor

Gravelly desert soil on the fans and terraces of the Valley floor, often with a layer of caliche, soil cemented hard by calcium carbonate or silica, anywhere from a few inches to a few feet down.

Dig to firm ground, break out caliche that sits high in the base and haul it off the site, bring in aggregate base compacted in lifts, and slope the slab and the grade so roof and sprinkler water run away from it and off the hardpan.

What fails here first

  • Slabs sunk or cracked beside sprinkler beds and downspouts
  • Water standing along an edge for days after a storm
  • Corners and edges dropped below the next panel
  • Cracks that keep opening over the same low spot

Shadow Mountain patio questions

Straight answers

Patios around the small Shadow Mountain preserve are often original to 1970s homes, and Sam The Concrete Man North Phoenix builds both replacements and extensions there. The new slab is graded so water runs away from the house, with footings ready for a pergola or shade cover. Lighter integral colors and cool-deck style finishes help keep bare feet comfortable.
