Concrete Driveway Contractor in Coronado, Phoenix, AZ

Narrow lots, alley garages, and Coronado driveways that fit them.

Phoenix · River and wash alluvium

Coronado is a historic district east of downtown Phoenix, mostly bungalows and small revival-style homes from the 1920s to the 1940s on narrow lots, many with alleys behind them. That shapes the driveway work. Some homes have a slim drive squeezed beside the house, others park off the alley on a pad by a garage or carport, and plenty have both. We rebuild narrow front drives and ribbon strips, pour alley-side parking pads and replace worn aprons, using finishes that suit a small historic house.

What Coronado driveways need

Under these lots is river and wash alluvium. It drains easily, and that's the good news. The catch is that old slabs were often poured right on loose soil, and decades of watering lawns and gardens have let it settle. We remove soft soil, compact new aggregate base in lifts and set rebar on chairs. On alley pads, where trash trucks and cars turn in, we pour thicker and slope the slab so water drains into the alley and away from the garage.

Coronado is in the City of Phoenix, so the street apron is built to city standards, 6 inches thick, usually under a city permit. Being a historic district, work that faces the street may need preservation review, and we prepare the layout, finish and color for it. Narrow side yards and alleys decide how the concrete gets in, and we plan that during the free on-site estimate. Call (602) 773-1313 for a printed quote.

What’s included

Every Coronado driveway we pour starts with the ground under it, river and wash alluvium here, and the same list of work goes into the quote:

  • New concrete driveways
  • Driveway replacement and tear-out
  • Extensions, widening and side parking
  • RV and trailer parking pads
  • Stamped, colored and exposed-aggregate finishes
  • Aprons at the street, with the city permit where one is needed
  • Caliche, fill and soil checked before forming
  • Compacted aggregate base, deeper where you park heavy
  • Slope that sends water away from the garage
  • Control joints laid out before the pour
  • A pour timed and cured for the heat
The ground under Coronado

River and wash alluvium

Layered silt, sand and gravel laid down by the Salt River and the desert washes, across the flood plains and alluvial fans of the central and west Valley.

Compaction done in lifts at the right moisture, with loose or soft soil dug out and replaced, a thicker section anywhere a truck, trailer or RV will park, and grading that keeps runoff off the slab and out from under it. Washes and drainage easements stay open.

What fails here first

  • Corners or joints sunk below the next panel
  • Ruts or cracks along the tire lines of a driveway
  • Gaps opening under the edge of a slab
  • Soil washed out along an edge after a monsoon storm
