Concrete Driveway Contractor in Scottsdale, AZ

South Scottsdale or the north end, the base work changes with the ground.

Maricopa County · Caliche desert floor

Scottsdale is two cities when it comes to driveways. South Scottsdale is mostly 1970s housing, with drives that are fifty years old and ready for tear-out, widening or a side pad for a boat or RV. The newer north side, where the median home dates from about 2000, climbs toward the McDowell Mountains and Pinnacle Peak, and there the work leans toward extensions, decorative overhauls and parking courts. We handle both, with broom, stamped, colored and exposed-aggregate finishes.

What Scottsdale driveways need

Most of the city sits on caliche desert floor. A hard caliche layer a few inches to a few feet down holds water, and the soil above it softens after irrigation or a monsoon storm. In south Scottsdale that often means an old drive settled where sprinklers soaked it. Up north, caliche can sit high and run into rock near the mountains. We dig to firm ground, break out caliche that's too close to the surface, replace it with compacted base and slope the slab away from the garage. The same driveway can need very different base work at each end of the city.

Permits come from the City of Scottsdale, and the crew checks its rules for your apron and driveway before scheduling. Many Scottsdale communities have an HOA that reviews color and finish, and we prepare what the review asks for. Summer pours are scheduled for cool morning hours, with curing started right away, and monsoon-season dates are planned around the forecast. On the north end, we also check how the truck will reach drives on sloped lots. Call (602) 773-1313 for a free on-site estimate and a printed quote.

What’s included

Every Scottsdale driveway we pour starts with the ground under it, caliche desert floor here, and the same list of work goes into the quote:

  • New concrete driveways
  • Driveway replacement and tear-out
  • Extensions, widening and side parking
  • RV and trailer parking pads
  • Stamped, colored and exposed-aggregate finishes
  • Aprons at the street, with the city permit where one is needed
  • Caliche, fill and soil checked before forming
  • Compacted aggregate base, deeper where you park heavy
  • Slope that sends water away from the garage
  • Control joints laid out before the pour
  • A pour timed and cured for the heat
The ground under Scottsdale

Caliche desert floor

Gravelly desert soil on the fans and terraces of the Valley floor, often with a layer of caliche, soil cemented hard by calcium carbonate or silica, anywhere from a few inches to a few feet down.

Dig to firm ground, break out caliche that sits high in the base and haul it off the site, bring in aggregate base compacted in lifts, and slope the slab and the grade so roof and sprinkler water run away from it and off the hardpan.

What fails here first

  • Slabs sunk or cracked beside sprinkler beds and downspouts
  • Water standing along an edge for days after a storm
  • Corners and edges dropped below the next panel
  • Cracks that keep opening over the same low spot

Sam The Concrete Man North Phoenix pours driveways from 1970s south Scottsdale to the newer north side climbing toward the McDowell Mountains and Pinnacle Peak. The base work differs at each end: caliche on the Valley floor gets broken out where it sits high, and sloped lots up north need grading for runoff. Every drive gets compacted aggregate base, rebar on chairs and a thickened apron, with street work checked with the City of Scottsdale.
