Concrete Driveway and Patio Contractor in McDowell Mountain Ranch, Scottsdale, AZ

Concrete that holds its grade at the foot of the McDowells.

Scottsdale · Desert foothills and rock

McDowell Mountain Ranch climbs toward the McDowell Mountains on the north side of Scottsdale, right beside the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. The homes are mostly from the 1990s and 2000s, built on master-planned streets that step up the slope. Behind many of them the yard ends at open desert, so storm runoff comes down from above and has to go somewhere other than under your patio.

About McDowell Mountain Ranch

Working in McDowell Mountain Ranch

McDowell Mountain Ranch is a master-planned north Scottsdale community from the 1990s and 2000s at the foot of the McDowell Mountains, beside the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

Rock sits close to the surface here, and a slab can cross from solid rock to fill within a few feet. We dig through the rock where needed, compact the fill to match, and set drainage on the uphill side of the slab. Where a patio cuts into the slope, a short retaining wall is often part of the plan. The City of Scottsdale handles permits, and your HOA reviews the design; we prepare both.

The ground under McDowell Mountain Ranch

Desert foothills and rock

Sloped lots on and around the Valley’s mountains, where thin, stony soil sits on bedrock or hardpan: granite that weathers to coarse sand in the McDowells, older schist in the Phoenix Mountains, and volcanic rock in parts of the north Valley hills.

On these lots the trouble is grade and water more than the soil itself. Rock and hardpan sit close to the surface, so excavation is slow and the support under a slab can change from rock to fill within a few feet. Monsoon runoff comes down the slope fast and carries loose decomposed granite with it, and any cut into the hill needs a wall built to hold it.

How we build in McDowell Mountain Ranch

Excavation into the rock or hardpan, a thicker compacted base where the support is uneven, drainage that catches runoff above the slab and carries it around, and engineered retaining walls where the grade is cut. Walls on hillside lots often need a permit, and each city and town has its own rules, so we check yours.

What fails here first

  • Edges undercut or washed out after storms
  • Runoff and gravel washing across the driveway from uphill
  • Cracks where a slab crosses from rock to fill
  • Retaining walls that lean or weep
